God of the Sunshine Pavillion

This post is dedicated to what is truly an obscurity.A little bizarre facet of Walt Disney World history that's been sitting under our noses since 1971 and yet no one has commented on it. This blog post is going to break that silence and reveal a little hidden history in Adventureland.

Who's That Tiki Over There?

Yeah, that one. The one that Clyde and Claude are perched on. Who is that?!

It's a question I've asked before but no one knew the answer. People assumed that he simply had no name but that's wrong. His name has been said over the "Goddess Spiel" since 1971. But the roar of the waterfall and the quietness of the speakers have caused this detail to go unnoticed to most guest. But to the discerning Walt Disney World historian,a hidden connection between Magic Kingdom and the Florida Citrus Growers can be found in the tiki god's name.

His name is Citrikua.

Real vs Fantasy

My initial assumption was that this Tiki God was a real Polynesian god like that menagerie of deities that populate Disneyland's Enchanted Lanai. But a quick trip to a Hawaiian language site provided that this assumption was incorrect. There is no "S"-sound in the Hawaiian language, but there was clearly an s-sound at the start of the name. It was after I saw this picture that the answer struck me.

Those little plastic oranges provided me with the answer.
His name is Citrikua to connect him with all the other orange references that appeared in Tropical Serenade.

They basically gave Marc Davis's tiki god a fictional orange-evoking Hawaiian name to continue the theme that already prevailed in the show. They even call him a "god of health",as pointed out by How Bowsers, which connects oranges and healthiness in peoples's minds.

Like the Orange Bird,Citrikua lives on as a reminder of those Florida Citrus Growers days.

"Kiliki-wiki-ui! Kiliki-wiki-ui!
Spirits of the Tropics, heed our call!
Descend with your rhythms
For one and for all!

Goddess of Fire
Pele, by name!
Transform our pool
To an ocean of flame!

And now from the waters,
Citrikua emerge!
Oh,great god of health,
Your secrets we urge!"

My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean:Sea Shanties of the Columbia Harbour House and the Submarine Voyages

Researching theme park BGMs has expanded my musical horizons more than I ever thought possible. So many different styles of music are represented in the fantasy lands of the Magic Kingdoms that you start to become quite knowledgeable about different genres of music. One musical obsession of mine from the parks is a collection of tracks that are most often associated with Florida's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction but also have a history at Disneyland's Submarine Voyage, the Columbia Harbour House, and Pirate's Cove at Disneyland Paris.

These tracks are unique as they feature only a single concertina performing the songs. The songs are mostly sea shanties, though there are some other songs that are merely ocean-related.So far, I have found 17 of these tracks. Many of you will be familiar with some of them as being represented as the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea loop in the "Walt Disney World Forever" machines. However, those 7 tracks weren't all in the actual 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea loop. Here, for the first time,is the correct 1972-1993 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea loop:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea:Submarine Voyage Queue BGM 1972-1993

  1. O Johnnie,Come to Hilo
  2. A Long Time Ago
  3. A Whale of a Tale
  4. 'Round the Corner, Sally
  5. The Sailor Likes His Bottle
  6. A Roving
  7.  Sailor's Hornpipe
  8. Sailing, Sailing
  9. Drunken Sailor

The Disneyland Submarine Voyage was given a similar loop in 1976 when the Submarine Voyage was refurbished to become more similar to Florida's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Based on the information I have,I am yet to determine if this is the complete loop.I believe it is accurate but that there may be around three missing tracks.Nevertheless, here is the Submarine Voyage queue BGM:

Submarine Voyage:Adventure Through Liquid Space Queue BGM

  1. Whale of A Tale
  2. O Johnnie,Come to Hilo
  3. A Long Time Ago
  4. 'Round the Corner,Sally
  5. The Sailor Likes His Bottle
  6. Sailing,Sailing
Now,as I mentioned before, there are 17 tracks I have in existence from this same collection. While only some were used at the Submarine Voyages, all of them were used at the Columbia Harbour House with possibly some more,as the BGM for that restaurant from 1972 to 1994.In no particular order, the tracks I have found are here in this track I made.Keep in mind that this is also supposed to represent what the original Harbour House BGM would've sounded like:
  1. A Whale of A Tale
  2. Asleep in the Deep
  3. Blow the Man Down
  4. Drunken Sailor
  5. My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
  6. Sailing,Sailing
  7. Sailor's Hornpipe
  8. A Long Time Ago
  9. A-Roving
  10. Hanging Johnny
  11. Heave Me Away, Johnny
  12. O Johnnie, Come to Hilo
  13.  Off to Sea Once More
  14. Over the Waves
  15. Rio Grande
  16. 'Round the Corner,Sally
  17. The Sailor Likes His Bottle
If the song "Over the Waves" sounds familiar,it's because its one of the most common circus songs.

These 17 tracks represent some of the most atmospheric music done for a park BGM. Listening to them really takes you back to the parks whether it be eagerly waiting for your Submarine Voyage while gazing out on the deep blue lagoon or resting the dark, mahogany walls of the Columbia Harbour House,it's easy to imagine sailors playing these songs in their ships and taverns long ago.

Musical Theory:Bear Country and Frontierland

Welcome to the first edition of a new series of posts called Musical Theory, where I'll analyze some of the many background music loops used at Disneyland,Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland. In this first one I'll be discussing my theory on the connection between the 1972 Bear Country loops and the WDW Frontierland 1973 BGM.

Pana-Vue Slides from Walt Disney World

Now the 1973 Frontierland loop is extremely eclectic and can't seem to focus on a certain style. The first five tracks are from the Country Bear Jamboree album and were recorded for Florida's Mile Long Bar.At this point I know of 7 tracks recorded and used from this section. The remainder of the songs wildly fluctuate between bluegrass, honky tonk, and square dances. As I recreated this loop I was surprised at Jack Wagner's choices and I wondered why he made such bizarre choices.Give a listen to the loop yourself down below to hear what I mean.

Frontierland BGM 1973-1976

01. Red River Valley [2]
02. Polly Wolly Doodle [2]
03. Wabash Cannonball [2]
04. Old Betsy [2]
05. Bile'em Cabbage Down [2]
06. Red Wing
07. Golden Slippers
08. Tangle Weed [5]
09. Swanee River
10. You are My Sunshine
11. Tomahawk [5]
12. Down Yonder
13. Swinging Doors [1]
14. Love is Just a Four Letter Word [3]
15. Chicken Out (Joann's Theme) [4]
16. Buffalo Gals
17. Devil's Dream
18. Red River Valley
19. Old Joe Clark
20. Unknown

[1] The Buckaroos Play Buck & Merle by the Buckaroos
[2] Country Bear Jamboree [Soundtrack] by George Bruns
[3] Nashville Rock by Earl Scruggs
[4] Norwood: Music from the Motion Picture by Al De Lory
[5] Square Dance Tonight by Tommy Jackson

Unsurprisingly, this loop lasted a mere three years before being replaced by a much more Froniterland appropriate loop.My question is why is this Frontierland loop so strange.Well I believe the answer lies across the US,down in Bear Country.
Image result for disneyland bear country

Bear Country was the first Disneyland land to really have full music across the whole of the land. Before that Disneyland relied on mostly live music and, according to Jack Wagner, pop music. But Bear Country was made after Magic Kingdom, the first park to park wide BGMs so Jack Wagner crafted three loops that played in that honey of a place. The first loop played at the Golden Bear Lodge(Now the Hungry Bear Restaurant)/The Wilderness Trail(The Entrance to Bear Country),the second loop played at the Wilderness Trading Post/Teddi Barra’s Swingin’ Arcade/Mile Long Bar Complex that now houses Pooh's Corner, and the final played in the Country Bear Jamboree lobby.

The Country Bear Jamboree Lobby loop was made up of the tracks the Stonemans recorded at the same time as the music for the Country Bear Jamboree. The seven tracks that I know of are:

  • Polly Wolly Doodle
  • Wabash Cannonball
  • Bearless Love
  • Home on the Range
  • Red River Valley
  • Bang! Goes Old Betsy
  • Bile 'Em Cabbage Down
Based on live recording,I know that there were a few more tracks that are still unknown but since this loop lasted until 2001,when the Playhouse closed,I'm sure a complete recording will crop up someday.
Image result for disneyland bear country

As for the other two loops, this is where the 1973 Frontierland loop comes into play.I believe that the tracks used in the 1973 Frontierland loop are from the 1972 Golden Bear Lodge/Wilderness Trail loop and the Wilderness Trading Post/Teddi Barra’s Swingin’ Arcade/Mile Long Bar Complex loop.I believe the bluegrass/square dance tracks such as  Love is Just a Four Letter Word,You are My Sunshine, and Tangle Weed are from the Golden Bear Lodge/Wilderness Trail loop.I do have one small piece of direct evidence to support this that I'll discuss further down.As for the Wilderness Trading Post/Teddi Barra’s Swingin’ Arcade/Mile Long Bar Complex loop I believe that the honky-tonk piano songs such as Red Wing,Buffalo Gals, and Swanee River were possible tracks in that loop. Now,this one is pure conjecture but there is appealing logic behind it.Honky-tonk music is fitting for the Mile Long Bar and the Swingin' Arcade, and the Trading Post had a player piano inside it.However,as I said before, this is pure conjecture and I'm still searching for live recording confirmation.

Now,the logic behind my theory makes sense.Jack Wagner frequently reused music from old loops into newer loops. So it stands to reason that when he was making the WDW Frontierland loop he would simply reuse tracks from the Bear Country loops. However, there is some concrete evidence to link the two.It has been confirmed that "In The Gloryland" from Earl Scruggs's Nashville Rock played in the Bear Country Golden Bear Lodge/Wilderness Trail loop and it just so happens that another song from that LP, Love is Just a Four Letter Word, also happens to be in the 1973 Frontierland loop.

I hope one day to confirm my theory and I've been looking hard to find some more information. If any comes to light I'll be sure to post it here and see if it confirms my theory or not.

She's kinda heavy, don't weigh a ton.
She's my woman, through and through.
I love her only 'cause the heart is true.

Let's go, Zeke !

Zeke:When I was young and in my prime,
I thought I never could marry.
But I fell in love with a pretty little gal,
And sure enough we married.

Tennessee:Atta-boy, Zeke!

Zeke:Ring-a-ding-ding Mary,
Prettyiest little gal, I ever did see.
Her name was Devilish Mary.

Zeb:What a gal!

Zeke:Hadn't been married but about two weeks,
She got as mean as the devil.
And every time I looked cross-eyed,
She'd hit me on the head with a "shevil."

Zeb:How sad.

Zeke:Ring-a-ding-ding Mary,
Prettiest little gal, I ever did see.
Her name was Devilish Mary.

Tennessee:What a pity.

Zeke:Her name was Devilish Mary.

Shaker:How long is forever?
How soon is now or never?
How long will these heartaches linger on?
And how long will my baby be gone?

The Sunbonnets:Everytime I meet a guy who gets me shook,
All I ever get from him's a dirty look.
It's the same way, everywhere I've found.
All the guys that turn me on, turn me down.

All the guys that turn me on, turn me down.
Nothing works for me that I've found.
It's the same way everywhere I see.
Nothing never seems to work for me.
Nothing never seems to work for me.

Doodle doodle do-do-do bum bump.

The Dude:One night I left the wife at home,
And went out with the boys.
I was acting like a Don Juan,
And making a lot of noise.

Zeke:Tell 'em,lover boy!

The Dude:A go-go girl called my hand,
I said, "I can't. I'm a married man."
She said "If you ain't gonna steal,
You better not prowl".

Zeb:He's a born loser.

The Dude:Don't do-si-do with a go-go.
If you can't bite, don't growl.
If you can't bite, don't growl.

Max:

Teddi Barra:Well, there he goes.
He hardly knows
The heart he's breaking.

Max:

I talked to him,
But I don't think
He understood.

Buff:

Oh, I'll just forget
About the plans
That we were making.

Henry:

Teddi Barra:Heart, we did all that we could.

Teddi Barra:

Big Al:There was blood on the saddle.
And blood all around.
And a great big puddle
Of blood on the ground.

Henry:

Henry and Sammy:

Sammy:

All:Well, he's big around the middle,
And he's broad across the rump.
Running ninety miles an hour,
Taking thirty feet a jump.

Ain't never been cornered
Ain't never been treed.
Some folks say he looks a lot like me.

High on the mountain,
Tell me what'n do you see?
Bear tracks, bear tracks,
Looking back at me.

Better get your rifles,boy
Before it's too late.
The bear's got a little pig,
And headed through the gate.

He's big around the middle,
And he's broad across the rump.
Running ninety miles an hour,
Taking thirty feet a jump.

Ain't never been cornered,
Ain't never been treed.
Some folks say he looks a lot like me.

Henry:

Max:

Henry,Sammy,and Heads:Come again!

Buff:

Melvin:

Heads:

Max:

Buff:

Heads:

Buff:

Max:

Buff:

It's Fun To Be Free,Part 2

In my opinion,Frontierland and Tomorrowland are the two most important lands when it comes to transportation and theming concerns,so I'll cover them last.I'll start my covering Fantasyland:

Fantasyland

Fantasyland has always been of a vague time period. In both incarnations,it has very obvious Old-World European tones. The 1955 Fantasyland was chock-full of Renaissance tournament facades and the 1983 Fantasyland is a charming storybook village with Toad Hall and the Evil Queen's Castle. Both Fantasylands had one major transportation attraction in common:The Skyway to Tomorrowland. This attraction loaded from a beautiful little Swiss chalet that sat among the hills of Storybook Land. When paired with the Matterhorn, especially after the 1976 update of that ride, the two went together amazingly. However, due to the small footprint of Disneyland's Fantasyland there aren't any other transportation attractions.

Frontierland

Frontierland is a big one when it comes to transportation. This is thanks to the Rivers of America. Now what is the Rivers of America supposed to represent? It represents the many rivers and forests of America. The river succeeds in seeming to be all these different rivers at once, which is why it doesn't seem strange to see a southern steam wheeler next to a wooden sailing ship. The real secret to why the Rivers of America seems so grand is the river traffic. The river just seems so alive. There are steamboats, sailing ships, and canoes plowing her waters. Now don't get me wrong, the river still looks amazing without ships, but the watercraft add real kinetic energy to Frontierland and the other adjacent lands. And anyone who has seen the Columbia or Mar Twain rolling around the bend knows how amazing that looks.

Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is the last land of Disneyland we will look at and this one is a big one.Tomorrowland thrives off the kinetic energy provided by transportation rides.Peoplemovers moving above you.Rocket Jets spinning in the air. There are submarines and cars going right by each other. Now the interesting thing is that Tomorrowland wasn't designed to look like a lived space. There are none of the little windows or false portals that are used in other lands to look like there are people living in those lands that are just out of sight.Yet,it still benefits from this kinetic energy because it conveys a sense of the future.Looking at videos of Tomorrowland 67 I'm reminded of the Jetsons. After all,Tomorrowland is an abstraction of "the world on the move" motif.
